A Scarf for Keiko by Ann Malaspina takes place in 1942 in Los Angeles, which was home to many Japanese American families. Sam and Keiko are classmates who are both knittings for the war effort. Knitting is not something that comes easily to Sam but Keiko is a star with the needles. The book takes an unflinching look at the treatment of the Japanese Americans during wartime through the eyes of these children. The illustrations are beautiful and the ending is thoughtful and hopeful.
