Gittel's Journey--An Ellis Island Story

Gittel’s Journey--An Ellis Island Story by Leslie Newman, illustrated by Amy June Bates, is the story of a young girl who leaves her beloved “old country” for a better life in America. Her journey begins with her mother but she has to make the crossing from Europe on her own because her mother has an eye infection and is barred from the voyage. She is very brave when she has to go through immigration on Ellis Island without a proper indication of her destination. All ends well; the illustrations are lovely and old fashioned and really enhance the depiction of that period in history.
