City of Norwalk
Common Council
About Norwalk's Common Council
Established by the Charter of the City of Norwalk, the
Common Council is the legislative, or law writing body of the City.
Though administrative powers are usually the province of
the Mayor, Norwalk's Charter gives certain administrative powers exclusively
to the Council and several others jointly to the Council and Mayor. Referred
to as the weak mayor form of municipal government, other municipalities
in the Northeast are similarly structured.
The Council does most of its work at the committee level.
The typical council member will attend two caucus meetings, two council
meetings, and three to five committee meetings a month. In addition, council
members are involved in other city entities, such as school building committees,
the Maritime Authority, the NEON board, and other agencies contributing
to the well-being of the City's residents.
Common Council Commmittees
The Common Council has eight standing committees. Each
member of the council is assigned to three or more committees.
The usual standing commmittee meeting days are given below,
as are the regular "full" council meeting days, providing a typical monthly
schedule of the Common Council.
Meeting days are subject to change. Contact the Norwalk
City Clerk's office at 854-7701 / 7704 to obtain the date, time, and location
of any particular meeting.
