Late in the Day by Tessa Hadley takes place in present-day London and is about two couples who are long-standing friends from university days. Hadley spares no one in this examination of what can happen when an unexpected tragedy in middle age throws everything about their relationships into question. Her prose is exquisite. The plot is developed in several time periods which illustrate their tangled history, with themes of adultery and aging. A master writer with a very perceptive pen brings these characters to life.
