Ojiichan’s Gift by Chieri Uegaki and Genevieve Simms is a tender tale of the peace and connections a girl and her grandfather find working in a Japanese garden. Ever since she was a little girl Mayumi has traveled to Japan in the summer for two months to stay with her grandfather. She is introduced to a different type of garden made from rocks and gravel, which requires patience and artistry to keep neat with a rake. She grows to love the garden and the time she spends with her grandfather. Years pass and the garden has to be given up, but after an initial tantrum she discovers how to preserve wonderful memories for both of them.
