Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield is deeply atmospheric. It starts with a group of people storytelling at an inn on the Thames in the 1800s. A young girl is brought in and feared drowned but she recovers, albeit as a mute. There are three families who all believe she is their missing child. The writing is beautiful, very evocative of the historic time when the action takes place. The characters are richly drawn and the sense of place very strong.
