The Altruists by Andrew Ridker is the story of the Alter family. Originally based in St. Louis they display various personality traits that are laughable and poignant at the same time. Their efforts to find their way in the world are realistically portrayed. Maggie finds generosity euphoric but tilts dangerously close to martyrdom, their father is destitute, and Ethan struggles in Brooklyn. The observations of each are often very funny, and the character development is excellent. You care about these flawed people.
