The Comforts of Home by Susan Hill is the latest in the Chief Police Inspector Simon Serrailer mystery series. Set in his hometown of Lafferton, it opens with Simon in the hospital recovering from a serious injury. The gripping plot thickens quickly. As always, his personal life is intertwined with his police work. Over the years Lafferton has certainly seen its share of murder. The author excels at character development, with realistic conundrums and emotional acts. Naturally, the main focus is on dastardly deeds. There is a parallel plot that takes place on a remote Shetland island involving a murder that unlocks a victim’s mysterious past.
