The Island

The Island by Ragnar Jonasson is a well-crafted police procedural that starts with a present-day crime which may hark back to a killing that occurred ten years before.  The author steadily ratchets up the suspense via multiple narrators and a fluid timeline that emphasizes the catastrophic consequences that can arise from unintended acts. It takes full advantage of the gorgeous but lonely Icelandic landscape to deepen the malevolent atmosphere. It also has a good handle on police department politics.
