The Lost Man

The Lost Man by Jane Harper is an exceptional thriller. She really knows how to capture the atmosphere of a place, in this case, the arid, isolated, endless stretches of the Australian outback. Sudden death in the family at the center of the book starts a chain of revelations involving events from the past and shines an unforgiving light on generations of cruelty. Solving the crime, if there was one, is almost incidental to this fine analysis of people struggling to make a living on the edge of civilization with all the unique challenges that entail.
