The Other Americans

The Other Americans by Laila Lalami uses multiple narrators to illustrate the varying impacts of a hit and run that kills a Morrocan immigrant in central CA. Everyone has a position that they need to protect, principally his daughter, the witness, the detective assigned to the case, an Iraqi war veteran, and the driver. Nora, the grief-stricken daughter, has been trying to escape from the dusty town where she grew up facing taunts for being different. She returns to seek justice for her father. Nothing about that mission is easy, as she fights against an atmosphere of casual evil and deeply rooted prejudice. It’s a novel about family, a mystery, and a devastating examination of prejudice. Highly recommended. (Non-Fiction)
