Anatomy: A Love Story

Anatomy: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz is a historical gothic romance with a macabre twist. Living in Edinburgh in 1817, seventeen-year-old Hazel Sinnett dreams of being a surgeon, but women are forbidden to attend anatomy lectures. Still, Hazel is determined to learn: if she can’t study corpses officially at the Royal Edinburgh Anatomist’s Society, she’ll have to get access to dead bodies another way. Enter Jack Currer, the attractive young stagehand and “resurrection man” who snatches bodies from graveyards to sell to the city’s physicians. As Hazel’s skills as a medical student improve, her friendship with Jack deepens into a romance. Anatomy defies categorization: it’s a nod to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, with elements of the supernatural, and is packed with grisly historical detail, but it’s also a sweet romance and a page-turning mystery.
