Artemesia by Nathalie Ferlut is a graphic novel biography of the 17th-century female artist Artemisia Gentileschi, whose extraordinary life is beautifully represented on these pages. Narrated in flashbacks by Artemesia’s daughter, Prudenzia, the book details Artemesia’s rise as an artist, her travels around Italy, and her marriage to a fellow artist, arranged by her father. But, the book also deals with an event that had a deep impact on both her life and her art: Artemesia’s rape at 18 by her tutor, and the subsequent public trial. Artemesia’s life is fascinating and her Caravaggio-like paintings are mirrored by the novel’s jewel-toned illustrations. (Non-Fiction)
