Born A Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah is excellent. It’s a no holds barred look at growing up in both apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa. His multi-race background was literally a crime when he was born, so his early years were virtually spent in hiding. It’s serious but also very funny in many parts as he skewers the ridiculous lengths South Africa went to separate the races. The unconditional love of his mother often expressed itself in ways that he did not appreciate at the time but her determination was critical to his success. (Non-Fiction; Biography)
