Chicken Talk by Patricia MacLachlan, illustrated by Jarrett Krosoczka is disarming. A family farm is populated by numerous chickens guarded by Pedro the rooster. They all have individual names, except the seven white chickens, all called Joyce after the farmer’s mother. One morning a message is scratched in the dirt that can only be left by a chicken who is tired of arugula. As the days go on the increasingly opinionated chickens leave more messages on a variety of subjects. It’s all very entertaining and wonderfully illustrated.
