Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert O'Brien is a classic middle grade novel that brings its animal characters brilliantly to life. Mrs. Frisby is a recently widowed mouse who has made a hardscrabble but cozy existence for her family of four baby mice, Teresa, Martin, Cynthia, and Timothy. In the winter, they hunker down in a cinderblock buried in the farmer Mr. Fitzgibbon's garden and, come spring, they move out to find new lodgings before the planting season puts them in danger. But, when her son Timothy gets pneumonia, Mrs. Frisby is faced with a serious problem: should she risk making Timothy worse by moving for spring or face almost certain death by staying in Mr. Fitzgibbon's garden? Luckily for Mrs. Frisby, help comes in the form of the rats of NIMH, a highly intelligent band of rats who escaped from a laboratory and use their superpowers for good. Can their help keep Mrs. Frisby and her family safe? Join us as we find out!
