What makes a book a “classic”? The writer Italo Calvino defined them this way: "A classic is a book which has never exhausted all it has to say to its readers." In that spirit, the Classics Book Club reads and discusses novels that have become beloved over the years, whether they're well-known staples or under-the-radar gems. We’ll read one classic or modern classic book  and engage in a lively discussion about the text in person at the Library!

For this meeting, we'll be reading My Antonia by Willa Cather. A classic tale of the American West at the turn of the last century, the novel tells the story of an immigrant family as they struggle to survive and thrive on the lonely but beautiful plains of Nebraska. When the orphaned Jim Burden is sent to live with his grandparents in Black Hawk, he's introduced to both the wild landscape and the immigrant Shimerda family, whose daughter, Antonia, captures his imagination as the two come of age together. Cather's exquisite prose brings to life both the landscape and the people in this short but magnificent novel.
