Conclave by Robert Harris is a fictional account of the election of the next Pope. The politicking among the cardinals who are part of the conclave illustrate the changing fortunes of the church, especially the impact of the explosive growth of Catholic churches outside of Western Europe. The balloting is suspenseful as the cardinals vie for the majority needed to ascend to the highest office of the church. Harris has done his homework and really captured the tense atmosphere that would prevail in the Vatican at this time. There’s a nifty ending too!
