DopeSick by Beth Macy is riveting and sobering. The root of the opioid and heroin crisis, a constant in today’s headlines, is analyzed. The author is based in Roanoke VA, one of the original epicenters of the addiction crisis responsible for 72.000 deaths in 2017. Her journalistic prose style is tailor-made for her explanation of how we got here and who is to blame. It's a good combination of chronological facts on the development of the drugs and their marketing strategy, interspersed with the personal stories of families, doctors, EMTs and others caught up in the unfolding disaster.
