Eligible by Curtis Sittenfield is the latest in the modern retellings of the Jane Austen novels. It is based on Pride and Prejudice. The author has smoothly updated the novel, setting it in Cincinnati with all the humor and class sensitivities intact. It is certainly light and not a slave to the original, maintaining the witty dialogue and barbed back and forth conversations between Liz and Darcy. The character of the ever patient Mr. Bennett is particularly good. Austen fans may be flummoxed by the characters’ sexual proclivities but it’s all in good fun.
