Every Dog in the Neighborhood

by Philip C. Stead, illustrated by Matthew Cordell, starts when Louis tells his grandma he wants a dog, but Grandma argues that there are enough dogs in the neighborhood already. To bolster his argument, Louis realizes he needs to find out exactly how many dogs live in his neighborhood, but neither his grandma nor city hall has the answer. So, while Grandma is busy with a mysterious project of her own, Louis decides to conduct a survey himself and sets out on the delightful errand of meeting and counting all of the neighborhood’s dogs (and meeting a couple of cats and a reptile too!). The result is a sweet portrait of Louis’s neighbors and their beloved pooches, as well as a surprise for Louis!
