Hatchet Island

Hatchet Island by Paul Doiron is a perfect summer thriller, with its eerie island setting and shocking twists, featuring Doiron’s returning character Mike Bowditch, a Maine game warden. Mike and his girlfriend, biologist Stacey Stevens, are investigating a mysterious disappearance on a remote island that’s a research station and sanctuary for endangered seabirds. Biologists at the sanctuary have clashed with local fishermen over plans to close part of the Gulf of Maine to fishing boats to protect endangered whales. Now, tensions have boiled over into outright hostilities, with biologists threatened and the sanctuary’s founder, Maeve McLeary, missing. Soon, there are two murders for Mike to try to solve and more unsavory details emerge about the sanctuary’s dire finances, a mysterious stalker, and two suicides that might be connected with this complex case.
