Hell Fire by Karin Fossum is full of creeping dread. Inspector Sejer is faced with a dead mother and child, and although we are introduced to a major suspect early in the book it is still very tense. The characters are fully realized, which makes the heartbreaking set up that much harder to bear. Fossum is a very subtle writer; she draws the reader in and then delivers the shocks.
