by Julio Torres, illustrated by Julian Glander, is a very funny, slightly surrealist book about the inner lives of overlooked household appliances (Torres is a comedian known for his inventive sketches on Saturday Night Live). A lowly toilet plunger decides that it wants to be a vase so that it can hold beautiful flowers instead of, well, you know what. Then, a saucepan decides it would rather be a garbage can, and, come to think it, the garbage can itself actually wants to be a pillow. Further discussions ensue, interspersed by exclamations from a grumpy vacuum cleaner who just wants everything to stay put! Accompanied by bright, candy-colored illustrations, the book’s humor carries an earnest message for kids to discover themselves and to use their imaginations to soar beyond limitations.
