Independence Cake

Independence Cake by Deborah Hopkinson and Giselle Potter is a lesson in early American culinary history. Amelia Simmons wrote America’s first cookbook. Very little is known about her and this is a fictionalized account of her life. She was self taught, the first to use local ingredients such as cornmeal, and coin new descriptions such as “cookie”. The lovely illustrations are in a primitive style perfectly suited for the time.
