King of the Sky by Nicola Davies, illustrated by Laura Carlin, is about a relationship between a young, homesick boy and an older gentleman who races pigeons. The title refers to the pigeon the older gentleman is confident will win the race even though others are not so sure. There is a lot of neat background about how racing pigeons are trained and the heroic roles they played during wartime. The concluding pages are slightly tense as the outcome of the big race is uncertain. Eventually, the pigeon earns his title! The illustrations are stunning.
