The Knish War on Rivington Street

The Knish War on Rivington Street by Joanne Oppenheim is loosely based on a real retail competition in NYC that took place in 1916. Two knish sellers almost drive each other out of business by continually lowering their prices in order to steal each other’s customers. The detailed period watercolors really capture the unique streetscape of early 20th century Manhattan. A wise mayor figures out how to broker a compromise with the obstinate bakers which benefits all hungry knish fans.
