Leopard at the Door by Jennifer McVeigh is haunting. Kenya in the 1950’s is really the main character of this historical novel. It has a very strong sense of place; the descriptions of the countryside and the people are the backdrops to tensions that will come to a boil with the Mau Mau rebellion. The young, somewhat naive central character is Rachel, coming home after six years away in boarding school in England where she was sent after her mother died. The changes she encounters are huge, but she must find a way forward even as turmoil threatens to overwhelm her.
