Minds of Winter by Ed O’Loughlin is terrific. The setting is the Arctic, and it takes place in two time periods. The doomed Franklin expedition that went in search of the Northwest Passage in the 1850’s with the ships Terror and Erebus is one, and a present day disappearance is another. The sense of place is beautifully detailed, with the unique weather and light patterns described as if they were happening on the page. Like a Russian doll mysteries lead to other mysteries as the beautiful but deadly Arctic environment holds tightly to its secrets.
