My Last Continent by Midge Raymond is set largely in Antarctica. The main characters spend part of every year there guiding tourists, studying penguins and trying to sustain a normal life in such an unusual, isolated area. The sense of place is powerful; the author captures the beauty and desolation of the landscape while educating the reader on the threats posed to the wildlife. The plot does not unwind sequentially, tension builds steadily. Fully drawn characters and excellent writing makes this a great read.
