Norman and Mildred have a wonderful time together, but when a new sapling sprouts up next to Mildred, Norman becomes convinced he’s being replaced in his best friend’s affections. He impulsively digs up the new sapling and deposits it far away from Mildred, but feels guilty almost immediately (“I have hit rock bottom!” he says). What Norman decides to do next to salvage the situation is a sweet lesson in how to deal gracefully with change.
