Nour's Secret Library

by Wafa’ Tarnowska, illustrated by Vali Mintzi, is a story of resilience. When the bombardment of Nour’s home in Syria gets too dangerous, schools shut down, shops close, and Nour and her family are forced to hide in a neighbor’s basement, sometimes going without food, water, and electricity. But, out of the rubble in Damascus, Nour and her cousin start collecting abandoned books, a stash that quickly becomes a secret, underground library. Based on a true story of the Syrian civil war, Nour’s Secret Library shows that books, like hope, can persist in the direst situations.
