Rather be the Devil

Rather be the Devil by Ian Rankin finds a “retired” John Rebus in vintage form. He manages to insinuate himself into active investigations despite being just a consultant to the Edinburgh police force. Reluctantly drinking light beer and definitely coughing too much, he dives into both active and cold cases that threaten to upend the tentative order the local, rival crime bosses had sanctioned. Competition has created a tough environment for the old warhorses and the newer arrivals--in both the underworld and the force.
