by Leanne Hatch starts with a little girl named Rosie picking out a cheerful yellow dress at a thrift store: “But not just any dress. One that sparkled and shined. It was magical.” When Rosie buys it and takes it home, she notices another girl’s name, Mila, scrawled on the back collar of the dress. She starts to let her imagination soar, making up stories about this girl who had previously owned the dress. Was she a figure skater? A trapeze artist? A mermaid? Does she like the same things as Rosie? Thinking about the dress’s previous owner gives the garment an extra special meaning. When Rosie grows out of it, she knows just what to do: add her own name to the collar and donate the dress again, so it can belong to someone new!
