Salt Lane by William Shaw is a police procedural set in Kent, England. He is a masterful creator of a strong sense of place that captivates. The tension builds from the first page and never lets up. Alexandra Cupidi is a recent transfer to the countryside from the London police and is faced with a puzzling case. An unidentified woman is found floating in the local marsh, and that is just the start. She has to juggle the vagaries of life with a teenaged daughter and an elderly mother, along with colleagues who are not always supportive. It's a terrific page-turner.
