So Much Life Left Over

So Much Life Left Over by Louis de Bernieres is wonderful. The writing is beautiful. It takes place in multiple locations in Europe, Asia, and India between the world wars. The main characters are British who fought in WWI and have had difficulty adjusting to peacetime. They have known each other, and some have loved each other, since childhood. The relationships are explored as they struggle to find the answer to the question “If you expected to die in war and didn’t what do you do with so much life left over”?  The sections set in Ceylon are particularly interesting. There is a lot of history in these pages and as the book closes and the second war nears their lives are reshaped once again.
