South Pole Station by Ashley Shelby is a wonderful read. It’s well written and explores Antarctica, a lesser known corner of the world. Cooper is there as an artist in residence, a designated “polie” for 6 months. She has a bird’s eye view of all the machinations that make life at the pole work, or not. The pole attracts all kinds of personalities, some of them true misfits, some brilliant, and many are funny whether they mean to be or not. It’s a generous, fascinating window into a unique environment where getting along is crucial. The dialogue is witty and the tension that develops among the scientists is well portrayed. Highly recommended.
