A Spy Called James

A Spy Called James by Anne Rockwell, illustrated by Floyd Cooper, is the inspiring story of James Lafayette, a Revolutionary War double agent. General Lafayette commanded troops during the Revolution that helped win key battles. He also had a secret weapon—James--an enslaved man from Virginia who was planted in the British camp to spy and spread disinformation about American plans. The British were totally taken in by James, who performed many courageous deeds. Without him, the war might have ended very differently. Lafayette insisted James be freed after the fighting, which is why he took the name Lafayette. (Non-Fiction-Biography)
