Strangers in Budapest

Strangers in Budapest by Jessica Keener is excellent historical fiction. It takes place in Budapest in the 1990’s. Will and Annie and their baby move there to set up a business in a country still reeling from decades of communist rule. The author lived in Budapest during that time and her descriptions of life as an expat are expertly done. As they become embroiled in a friend’s request to look in on an elderly gentleman the suspense ratchets up and circumstances get more complicated. This is a well-written, fascinating glimpse of trying to build a life where nothing is familiar.
