The Distant Dead by Heather Young is truly eerie. It takes place in dirt poor, arid, rural Nevada. The main characters are hopelessly stuck in many ways. A horrific crime opens the book, and the young boy caught in the middle is a memorable creation, wise beyond his years for sad reasons. It’s a real page-turner, with suspense that builds slowly.
