The Madwoman Upstairs by Catherine Lowell is not just for Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights fans. Samantha Whipple, the last remaining Bronte descendant, enrolls at Oxford to study literature. Her father died a few years before after dropping a tantalizing clue that there was a trove of Bronte memorabilia that is her legacy. She is skeptical, but the novel revolves around the gradual unveiling of the literary mystery. The help of a handsome professor supplies a romantic angle. The writing is terrific and the background of the Bronte sisters is woven into the story very cleverly.
