The Night Ferry by Lotte and Soren Hammer is set in Denmark and has a strong sense of place. It’s a well-written police procedural, the fifth in a series, that opens with a devastating boat crash that kills 16 children and four adults. Eventually, the complex investigation leads back to the civil war in Bosnia and the role of the European and American military in that conflict. Perplexing twists and the tie-ins with a cold case confuse the team for a time. It’s easy to jump in the middle of this series. This is a particularly good one, the characters are well developed and the wartime backstory is compelling.
