The Night Ship

The Night Ship by Jess Kidd tells the story of two lonely children without mothers, born centuries apart, mysteriously connected by the fate of a ship. In 1628, nine-year-old Mayken leaves her home in the Netherlands with her nursemaid to sail on the Batavia bound for Indonesia, to reunite with her distant father. Mayken’s inquisitive personality leads her to explore the ship disguised as a boy, looking for evidence of a mythical sea monster. Four centuries later, in 1989, a newly orphaned young boy, Gil is sent to live with his grandfather on an island off the coast of Australia, a beautiful, haunted place that played a pivotal role in the history of Batavia. Both children’s lives share certain similarities, but it’s the dark, mysterious fate of Batavia that connects them.
