The Past by Tessa Hadley examines the impact of a final summer holiday on four siblings, together for the first time in years at their grandparents’ Somerset house, which will likely now be for sale. Old rivalries, childish attention getting behavior, and new relationships are fodder for a beautifully plotted and written novel. The sense of place is very strong and the characters believable. This is definitely one of the solid reads of the year to date.
