by Josh Lacey, illustrated by Momoko Abe, is a quirky book about an unusual pet. Albert has been begging his parents for a pet, but they keep saying no. Then, one day, Albert’s dad hands him a wrapped package containing his new “pet”: a potato! (“Dad made jokes like that all the time”, Albert says). Underwhelmed with his gift, Albert still can’t help noticing that the potato looks sad and decides to play with it. Soon, he and the potato are best friends and go everywhere together: to the library, to the playground, and even to bed, where the potato sleeps on his pillow. Some readers may anticipate the problem Albert will eventually encounter with his pet potato, but the solution is a sweet one that delights Albert and provides a lovely lesson about what’s possible with a little imagination.
