The Reckoning

The Reckoning by Yrsa Sigurdardottir is Icelandic noir at its best. It’s a dark police procedural. The past and present collide when a 10-year time capsule is unearthed that contains a strange list of initials. Fairly quickly bodies start appearing. There is a complex and harrowing mystery unspooling that goes back to the shivery opening chapter. A flawed hero and some deeply buried chemistry between the detective and psychiatrist working the cases generates good, sharp dialogue.  As with all his novels, there is a strong sense of place.
