The River

The River by Peter Heller charts an initially idyllic canoeing trip through northern Canada which turns really ugly very quickly. Two college friends sence a forest fire is a real danger and make plans to leave the wilderness. They hear, but can't see, a couple fighting but only see the man the next day. The rest of the book unspools a terrifying journey fraught with human and natural dangers. Heller has an expert’s knowledge of the wilderness and conveys the frightening and overwhelming events with conviction.
