The Scribe of Siena

The Scribe of Siena by Melodie Winawer uses time travel to transport the reader to medieval Siena in this terrific historical fiction. All the Italian city-states are at odds with each other, with the powerful Florentines aggressively seeking to overthrow the local Sienese government. A present day neurosurgeon finds her thrown back in time to the 1340’s, right before the plague wreaks havoc on the city. She has been investigating her brother’s research into an artist and finds her likeness in a painting. The rest, as they say, is history. It’s a fascinating fantasy that will teach the reader a lot about all aspects of life in medieval Italy. It’s a very enjoyable read.
