The Sound of Gravel

The Sound of Gravel by Ruth Wariner is a memoir of growing up in a compound in rural Mexico run by a polygamous Mormon sect. The author was the thirty ninth of her father’s forty two children. It’s amazing she survived to become a well rounded adult as the sect she grew up in was very extreme. Her resilience is amazing, as her childhood was disruptive and at times abusive. She has the ability to describe her life from a child’s perspective, and forgive and love the people who made it so difficult.
