The Summer Country by Lauren Willig is fascinating historical fiction. It takes place in Barbados, beginning in 1854 with the arrival in Bridgetown of Emily Dawson, a parson’s daughter. She is the “poor relation” of a wealthy plantation-owning family. It's a Victorian drama told in two time periods. It’s old fashioned in some ways but rich in character development and plot. The author has clearly done her research on the class system and the impact of slavery. This is a very good read.
